In isolation, each of these articles makes for shocking reading. Taken together, they help to pull the mask away from ‘Big Society’ and reveal the commitment to democracy that our government has. I cannot shake the image of the cat, and the metaphor to which it is attached.

This is a remarkable piece of work from a remarkable man. That he wrote it from his hotel bedroom gives it a real sense of immediacy and urgency. That it still retains such clarity and vision is a testament to a master craftsman at the peak of his powers. Throughout you can hear the sounds of occupation as bullets of injustice punctuate the landscape. And somehow, Luke manages to find hope in the desert. We must cherish his words and his work.

I am aware that the last year has been very difficult for MTM who have now had to re-name themselves MTM 1974 to distinguish themselves from that which has been put in their place. I am shocked by this turn of events. The people who run MTM 1974 are honourable, hard-working, principled and peaceful people. I place absolute trust in them and will always bring young people including my own children (who are 7 and 8 years old) to work with them. They need to be funded. They need to be given permanent status within the city of Mostar. They need to be given the facilities to be able to continue their work. Even at this time of world recession, there is no greater investment than in the work that they do to.

Dorothy has changed the world. She has left her mark on so many of us and both directly and indirectly influenced the lives of tens of thousands of young people. It is right and proper that she is honoured by society for her gifts to us. That she was awarded it in her lifetime is fitting. Seeing her daughter’s and her grand-daughter’s pride and love at the celebration of her life in December was a privilege.

Dorothy lit so many torches that enable us and those with whom we work to shed light on all the corners of the Universe. It is our responsibility to keep the flames burning and to start our own fires from them.
