In January 2010 a team of NATD members brought together a group of students and ex-students from Hazelwick School in Crawley, West Sussex. Some were in their final year at school, others were in full time employment. Still others were at University. They were united in their desire to make a difference – to collaborate on making a statement about their understanding of the world, through Drama to a new audience that they wanted to meet and understand. Their journey took them to Mostar in Bosnia Herzegovina in August of that year.
They took the ancient Greek legend of Philomel and Tereus as their starting point and created ‘Tongue’ , a powerful and disturbing piece of theatre that explored questions of power and control traced back to the origin of the species. The response was overwhelming and the group were honoured with an award from the Youth Theatre Festival Committee – the Grozdanin Kikot. They returned to this country and immediately set about forming a Theatre Company: Bridges.
