Casting for the role of “Martine” in
The Raft of the Medusa
The Story of a Painting, the Painting of a Story
A participatory theatre event for schools, touring autumn 2013
We are putting together a team of actors to explore the true events of a shipwreck in 1816 and how the survivors struggled to tell their story. The team will use their skills as actor facilitators to create a participatory theatre event that combines the telling of the story with contributions from the audience.
The role of Martine will focus on the artist, Theodore Gericault, and his decision to portray three black figures in his painting of the survivors on the raft, identifying it as a protest painting against slavery. Martine is an ambitious woman and plays a part in influencing a white aristocratic artist to depict a black man in a central heroic role at a time when the slave trade was still being supported. In view of this focus on ethnic diversity as a theme of the play we are particularly encouraging applications from black actors for this role.
You will have acting and facilitation experience as well as experience of working with children and young people.
Contract runs from Monday 2nd September to Saturday 16th November 2013 (Rehearsals will be in Leeds 2nd to 20th September)
